"Rancho, an engineering student, perceives the world differently. His friends, Farhan and Raju, often find him in unusual places. One day, they discovered something extraordinary: Rancho had transformed into a renowned scientist, recognized globally for his contributions to the field."
Plot
In their freshman year at the esteemed Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in Delhi, Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi meet their eccentric roommate, Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad, or "Rancho". Rancho's innovative approach to engineering, coupled with his playful demeanor, earns him the top spot in the class. However, his unconventional methods clash with the strict academic standards of the college's director, Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe, who is also known as "Virus". When a student named Joy Lobo is denied graduation due to an incomplete project, Rancho steps in to complete it. Tragically, Joy commits suicide before Rancho can present it. Rancho confronts Virus about the intense academic pressure faced by ICE students, but his concerns are dismissed. One evening, the trio gatecrashes a wedding party, unaware that it is for Virus's daughter, Mona. Mona's younger sister, Pia, initially rebuffs Rancho's antics, but she later finds herself attracted to him after he pranks her materialistic boyfriend, Suhas, to highlight his obsession with wealth and status. Pia ends her relationship with Suhas after he criticizes her for wearing a cheap watch, a memento from her mother. Virus warns Farhan and Raju about the potential negative impacts of their friendship with Rancho, citing their families' modest financial circumstances. This scares Raju into switching rooms with Chatur "Silencer" Ramalingam, a competitive Tamil student who relies on rote memorization and struggles with Hindi fluency. To teach Raju a lesson about memorization, Rancho and Farhan secretly alters the all-Hindi Teachers Day speech that Chatur is set to deliver for a visit by the Minister of Education. Humiliated and enraged, Chatur challenges Rancho to a ten-year showdown to see who will be more successful. On the eve of their final exams, Raju's father suffers a heart attack. With Pia's help, Rancho rushes Raju's father to the hospital on Pia's scooter. Raju initially blames Rancho for his father's condition, but upon realizing that Rancho saved his father's life, he reconciles with him. At the end of the year, Rancho tops the class, while Farhan and Raju are at the bottom. Rancho makes a bet with Virus that if either Farhan or Raju lands a job through on-campus interviews, Virus will shave his mustache. During their senior year, Rancho reveals to his friends because they consistently finish last: Farhan's passion lies in photography, not engineering, and Raju lacks self-confidence. After Farhan and Raju pledge to address their issues if Rancho confesses his feelings for Pia, the three of them, under the influence of alcohol, break into Virus's house. While trying to escape, they drunkenly urinate on Virus's letterbox. Virus spots Raju and threatens to expel him unless he implicates Rancho. Determined not to let his family and friends down, Raju attempts suicide but miraculously survives. This event leads to Virus revoking his expulsion. Raju's recovery is aided by the unwavering support and care from his friends and family. Raju secures a job, while Farhan persuades his father to allow him to pursue photography. Virus then attempts to sabotage Raju's success by setting an excessively challenging exam. With Pia's assistance, Rancho and Farhan infiltrate Virus's office and steal the exam paper. Raju, upon receiving the paper, refuses to cheat and discards it, but they are caught and expelled. Pia confronts her father about her brother's suicide, which was a result of Virus's pressure. During a severe rainstorm, Mona, who is expecting, goes into labor. Unable to drive to a hospital, Rancho improvises a vacuum cleaner into a ventouse and assists Pia, Farhan, and Raju in delivering the baby. Acknowledging Rancho's bravery, Virus rewards him with a valuable space pen, reserved for his most distinguished student, and revokes the trio's expulsions. On their graduation day, Rancho mysteriously disappears. A decade later, Chatur, now a successful vice-president in California, summons Farhan and Raju to remind them of a bet they made with Rancho about who would be more successful. While Farhan is on a flight, he pretends to have a medical emergency to meet with Chatur and Raju. The trio embarks on a quest to find Rancho. Upon reaching Shimla, they discover a man named Ranchhoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad, whose face is superimposed over Rancho's in their graduation portrait. Initially, the man is reluctant to reveal anything, but after Farhan and Raju threaten to dispose of his late father's ashes, he opens up. He explains that the "Rancho" at ICE was his family's gardener's son, "Chhote", who was exceptionally intelligent and gifted. Ranchhoddas's father paid for Chhote to attend ICE, on the condition that he use his son's name and, after graduating, cut all ties with ICE. Chhote, who was more interested in learning than in earning a degree, agreed, but warned that two fools would come looking for him one day. Ranchoddas expresses gratitude for what Chhote did and gives them Chhote/Rancho's address in Ladakh. On their journey, Farhan and Raju crash Pia's wedding to Suhas in Manali and convince her to join them in their search for Rancho. At the address in Ladakh, they find a flourishing school. They reconnect with "Millimetre", a former errand boy they met at ICE, now Rancho's assistant. He informs them that Rancho has been following their progress. They finally reunite with Rancho on a sandbar near the Pangong Lake. Rancho confesses his enduring love for Pia, and they share a passionate kiss. Chatur underestimates Rancho, assuming he's merely a schoolteacher and ridicules him. However, Rancho unveils his true identity as Phunsukh Wangdu, a highly successful entrepreneur with an impressive portfolio of 400 patents. His company is currently being pursued by Chatur's own enterprise. Overwhelmed by this revelation, Chatur concedes defeat. Meanwhile, the others distance themselves from him, their laughter echoing in the background.
