Plot

Anirudh "Anni" Pathak, a divorced middle-aged man, shares his life with his teenage son, Raghav Pathak. Raghav, an aspiring engineer, is eagerly awaiting the results of his entrance examination for the Indian Institute of Technology. On the eve of the results, Anni presents Raghav with a bottle of champagne, promising to celebrate his success together. However, Raghav, under immense pressure, interprets the gesture as a source of added stress. The following day, Raghav learns that he did not pass the IIT-JEE exam. Overwhelmed by the fear of being labeled a "loser," he attempts suicide by jumping off a balcony, but survives in a critical condition. Anni rushes to the hospital, where he seeks solace from his ex-wife, Maya Pathak. Maya blames Anni for not recognizing the extent of Raghav's stress. Dr. Sunit Dev "S. D." Kasbekar informs Maya and Anni that Raghav's condition is deteriorating due to his lack of will to live. In an attempt to instill hope in his son, Anni shares stories from his own college days, hoping to convince Raghav that he, too, was once considered a "loser." As Anni recounts his past, the narrative flashes back to 1992. Anni, assigned to Hostel 4, a.k.a. "H4," known for housing "losers," is initially dissatisfied with his living conditions. However, he soon befriends a senior student, Gurmeet "Sexa" Singh Dhillon, who is known for his hyper-sexual behavior and obsession with pornography. Meanwhile, Raghav has a seizure, causing Maya and Anni to panic. Dr. Kasbekar reassures them that Raghav is conscious, but his condition remains unchanged. When Anni asks about "Sexa," he goes with Maya to meet Raghav, who is skeptical about the story. Anni, believing that Raghav needs proof, manages to trace Sexa, who is now a consultant in London. He informs Sexa about the tragic situation and asks him to return to Mumbai. Sexa, upon hearing the news, postpones his work commitments and rushes to Mumbai. Upon seeing Sexa, Raghav recognizes him, and his doubts are laid to rest as Sexa continues with the story. Sexa recounts Anni's struggles to change his hostel and their first encounter with Maya at a canteen. As the narrative shifts back to the present, Sexa recounts a humorous incident from 1992 to Anni and Maya during their lunch break. He and his friend, Himanshu "Acid" Deshmukh, received a peculiar request from the father of a freshman named Sundar "Mummy" Shrivastava. Mummy, a shy and dependent young man, was known for his close relationship with his mother. Now, Mummy is working as an executive in the United States, and his accent has thickened. Upon hearing the news of Acid's arrival, Mummy warns Raghav, "Acid is bad news". Anni describes Acid as a former top student who began to fail his college exams and developed a sharp, foul-mouthed attitude. They reminisce about their college days, showing Raghav their photo album and discussing Anni's past relationship with Maya. Meanwhile, Dr. Kasbekar repeatedly informs them of Raghav's deteriorating condition. In 1992, a senior student named Raghuvir "Raggie" Chalkar, known for his reputation in Hostel 3, or "H3", fast-tracks Anni's application and invites him to join H3. However, Anni, after discussing this with Maya, decides to reject the offer, disappointing Raggie. Raggie reveals that Derek D'Souza, a well-known athlete from H4, has been wasting away for three years after rejecting a similar offer. Derek, a chain smoker, reunites with Anni. They revisit their first meeting, where Derek reveals that Raggie is a college bully who recruits talented students from other hostels into H3 and takes all the credit for H3's victories in the General Championship, or "GC". Anni learns that H4's reputation as the "loser" hostel stems from its poor performance in the GC over the years. Despite initial skepticism, Derek agrees to give it another try, and they embark on a series of trials, humorously failing along the way. After numerous attempts to find suitable players fail, Derek echoes Dr. Kasbekar's advice to Anni and Maya - that the key is to keep trying, as there's no other way. At Anni's residence, a lively discussion is underway. Derek, Acid, Sexa, and Mummy are present, discussing their decision to stay and support Anni and Maya amidst the negative health reports about Raghav. Just as everyone is about to gather for dinner, Anni and the group are surprised to find their long-lost member, Sahil "Bevda" Awasthi, at Anni's doorstep. Bevda rejoins the group at the hospital the following day, and as implied, he is depicted as the group's "Devdas-inspired drunkard," also known for his chess prowess. The group recounts their past, back in 1992, when they were preparing for the GC. Despite losing a series of matches in various sports, they managed to reach the quarterfinals in carrom, thanks to Mummy's leadership. In a bid to win the GC, Anni decides to distance himself from Maya. However, this strategy backfires when Bevda relapses and is hospitalized, leading the H4 team to lose hope. After a moment of reflection, Anni devises a plan to defeat the other hostels, which proves successful, resulting in several significant victories for H4. During a celebration at a bar, a violent altercation between Raggie's gang and the leading losers ensues, resulting in Mummy injuring his finger and missing the carrom semi-finals. Despite Acid's attempts to console Mummy, Anni seizes the opportunity to suggest a weightlifting tournament participant, Abhimanyu "Danda" Rathore, to lose weight and compete in the 42 kg category. His victory, coupled with Bevda's return from rehab, brings joy to the hostel. Bevda continues to contribute to H4's points tally in chess, Derek's athletic skills prove beneficial for H4, and eventually, H4 makes it to the finals, marking a historic first in college history. In the present, Dr. Kasbekar asks Anni, Maya, and their friends to leave Raghav so he can perform his surgical operation the following morning. They all promise Raghav to wait patiently for the "climax." After returning to Anni's home, Anni confesses to Maya that he may have failed in teaching Raghav how to handle failures, referring to the bottle of champagne he had bought for him. Observing Mummy calling his son Vedant and promising him a bike regardless of his exam results, Maya realizes that Anni is a remarkable father and reconciles with him after a heartfelt breakdown. In the middle of the night, Anni's phone rings, with Dr. Kasbekar informing him that Raghav has experienced severe convulsions and needs an immediate operation. Anni requests a 10-minute extension to conclude the story, and Dr. Kasbekar, initially hesitant, agrees after Maya's persuasion. They continue the narrative, picking up from 1992. A frustrated Raggie, upon discovering H4's strategies, decides to disrupt Bevda's game by offering him a bottle of alcohol and instructing his teammate to injure Derek's foot. Bevda, appearing inebriated upon Anni and Sexa's arrival, later reveals that he was not drunk, but had allowed his opponent to make a significant blunder, sacrificing his knight. As both Acid and Derek secure victories in the relay final, Bevda also clinches the chess tournament. The group reunites with Anni at the basketball court, where Anni, despite missing a 3-pointer by a hair's breadth, ensures H4's victory over H4 by a narrow margin. In the present, Raghav is taken aback by the close loss and inquires if Anni ever contemplated suicide. The group, including Anni, Derek, Mummy, Acid, Sexa, Bevda, and Maya, unanimously respond with a "NO". Anni then recounts a flashback to 1992, where Raggie publicly acknowledged them as "champs" for the first time, sparking a resounding cheer for H4. Anni emphasizes that the H4 hostelites were never again referred to as "losers", and that one's worth is not determined by the outcome, but by the effort put forth. Encouraging Raghav to persevere, Anni urges him to face his challenges, including the impending surgery, with courage. As Raghav is wheeled into the operating room, he visualizes Anni, Derek, Mummy, Acid, Sexa, Bevda, and Maya, cheering him on in their youthful forms. A year later, a fully recovered Raghav begins his first day of college, asking the audience not to inquire about his college or his rank, as he is content with living life to the fullest. As he arrives at the new campus, he chuckles at his senior's question, with the apparitions of his parents and the rest of the 'losers' looking on.
